PCCS statement on RCN strike action Dec 2022 & Jan 2023

Paediatric Critical Care Society statement on RCN strike action 15th December 2022 and 20th January 2023

As the foremost representative body for paediatric critical care professionals in the United Kingdom, the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS) fully supports the right of all its members to vote on and engage in industrial action as directed by their trades unions.

Paediatric critical care is officially designated by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) as an area of derogation and therefore our members will continue to maintain usual staffing levels in critical care areas throughout any industrial action. This will ensure the level of care for the sickest children in the UK will not be compromised during these periods.

A significant factor limiting paediatric critical care capacity in the UK continues to be a shortage of nursing staff. PCCS continues to work at a national level to improve this situation and would urge all parties involved in this dispute to work together to ensure paediatric nursing is viewed as an attractive and rewarding career pathway. This will allow our members to continue to provide safe and high-quality care in the future.
