Our Work as a Multidisciplinary Airway Group
As a multidisciplinary group, we lead and support a wide range of initiatives designed to strengthen the safety, quality, and consistency of airway management in paediatric critical care. Our work includes:
Developing a bronchoscopy curriculum and accreditation programme**
-Creating a structured, evidence‑based training and assessment pathway to standardise bronchoscopy skills and enhance patient safety.Developing an airway education programme (webinars and face to face) to support CPD on airway management in critically ill children
Advocating for waveform capnography as a minimum monitoring standard*
-Promoting the routine use of continuous waveform capnography for all advanced airway management and ventilated patients to reduce preventable harm.Reviewing PUMA (Project for UNiversal AIrway Management) Guidelines
-Contributing expert evaluation to ensure national airway guidelines are robust, evidence‑based, and aligned with best practice.Building a national network of PICU and transport airway leads
-Strengthening collaboration and knowledge‑sharing across units to drive consistent standards and coordinated quality improvement.Surveying training and confidence among airway assistants
-Identifying variation in preparation and competency to inform future training frameworks and support safer team‑based airway care.Shaping national safety initiatives, quality‑improvement work, and education projects.
Providing leadership in developing standards, addressing system gaps, and promoting reliable, high‑quality airway management across paediatric critical care.
Sharing details of CPD events, courses and education opportunities.
Developing a national platform for sharing learning from difficult cases.
Developing better ways of sharing information about difficult airway management accessible nationwide 24/7.
