Meet the PCCS Council
The PCCS Council consists of the Officers, Doctor Members elected in accordance with the Regulations, Doctor in Training Members elected in accordance with the Regulations, and Nurse or Allied Health Professional Members elected in accordance with the Regulations. The Officers are the President, the President Elect, the Immediate Past President, Vice Presidents, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary.

ADRIAN PLUNKETT
PCCS PRESIDENT ELECT
Adrian is a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist, and consultant at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He is the originator of the Learning from Excellence (LfE) initiative (launched in 2014), a programme which aims to promote staff morale, highlight good practice and integrate positive feedback and quality improvement into routine PICU culture. His interests include sepsis, epidemiology, and “learning from excellence” approaches.

CARLI WHITTAKER
PCCS IMMEDIATE PAST-PRESIDENT
Carli is the PCCS Immediate Past President, and after over 20 years on PCC has recently moved into the role of Head of Nursing Practice CYP at the Royal College of Nursing. She is both adult and paediatric nurse by profession, however her interests are predominantly focused on Paediatric Critical Care, having a PhD in the exploration of children’s nurses and the retention challenges they face. Carli is also interested in education, simulation, CYP leadership and CYP health inequalities, and she is passionate about broadening the scope and profile of Children’s Nursing not only in the UK, but globally. She works in partnership with the NHS, private and independent sector, and professional, statutory and regulatory bodies.

PETER DONNELLY
MEDICAL VICE PRESIDENT
Peter is a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He also serves as Associate Postgraduate Dean for the Trainee Development & Wellbeing Service at NHS Scotland’s Deanery, Medical Vice President of the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS), and Foundation Programme Director. His main clinical focus is clinical lead for cardiac intensive care, and he has a strong professional interest in staff wellbeing, peer support, burnout prevention, and education and training within high-stress healthcare settings.

TRACEY PHILLIPS
NON-MEDICAL VICE PRESIDENT
Tracey is a senior nurse in Paediatric Critical Care in Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, having worked here for 26 years. Tracey has been on the PCCS council for 7 years, 6 years as one of the nurse representatives and has been the Non-Medical Vice President for the last year. In this new role, Tracey has gained the responsibility of conference organiser and had great fun working alongside the Belfast team this year for the ASM in Belfast. Tracey’s interests are governance and all things patient safety, and she is a nurse lead for governance of which she lead (alongside the lead PIC Consultant for governance) monthly meetings, leading and attending incident review meetings, family support and the duty of candour process.

PATRICK DAVIES
HONORARY SECRETARY
Patrick is a paediatric intensivist at the Paediatric Critical Care Unit, Nottingham Children’s Hospital, where he oversees both the Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) and High Dependency Unit services. He holds the role of Honorary Associate Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Nottingham and since Autumn 2021 has also been the Lead for the East Midlands Paediatric Critical Care Network. His clinical and academic interests span critical care physiology, paediatric transport/retrieval medicine, and trial work — having published on diverse topics including electrical impedance tomography, pharmacological stability, PIMS-TS, pertussis, and is a three time Christmas BMJ author.

CONSTANTINOS KANARIS
TREASURER
Constantinos is a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Retrieval at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the North West & North Wales Paediatric Transport Service (NWTS). He is also a Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, with an Honorary Senior Lectureship at Queen Mary University of London. He holds a PhD in Medical Ethics and Law, and his clinical and academic interests include paediatric resuscitation, patient safety, physiology, and improving practices around paediatric critical care.

ARUN GHOSE

Dr Arun Ghose is a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, working across the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), and the KIDSNTS retrieval service. His clinical interests include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), cardiac intensive care, renal replacement therapies, therapeutic plasma exchange, retrieval medicine, and advanced high-dependency care. Arun is also the Communications Lead for the Paediatric Critical Care Society.

Dr Rohit Saxena is a Consultant in Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. He specialises in the management of children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease, providing care across the perioperative and postoperative spectrum of cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, heart and lung transplant, and mechanical circulatory support.
His clinical interests include advanced haemodynamic monitoring, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Ventricular assist device and optimisation of care for children with single-ventricle physiology.

Hannah Child is the Lead Respiratory Physiotherapist working in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. She is passionate about supporting critically ill children through advanced respiratory care, ventilation weaning, and early rehabilitation.
Her professional interests include early rehabilitation and mobilisation in critical illness, management of children on or after ECLS, secretions clearance strategies and monitoring changes and ventilation weaning for children with complex PICU pathways. Hannah is actively involved in regional and national education and training, sharing best practice in paediatric respiratory care and rehabilitation.
She also contributes to service development and quality improvement within the PICU Physiotherapy team, helping to advance evidence-based care and optimise recovery for every child and their family.

Akash is the Director of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at King's College Hospital, London, and Chair of the Renal/CRRT section of ESPNIC.
His interests include sepsis, liver failure, neurotrauma and acute kidney injury/CRRT.

Dr Ajay Desai is a consultant in paediatric intensive care medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital in London, United Kingdom. He is the lead for the paediatric ECMO programme, with a special interest in extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). He is a faculty member of the SPRinT (simulated interprofessional team training) programme, and has been a member of the education committee of the International Paediatric Simulation Society (IPSS) since 2012.
